IJSA Paper Review System

Submission Page

Manuscript Submission

Submission information: The International Journal on Document Analysis and Recognition accepts high-quality technical contributions which are within its aims and scope in two categories: Research Notes and Papers(long or short papers). Long papers are those which describe, for example, substantive new research results, a complete system designed to solve an important machine vision problem, or a comprehensive tutorial/survey. Short papers describe, for example, an algorithm, an implementation of a particular machine vision component, enhancements to previously published techniques, or an innovative application using well-known methods. Short papers usually have a shorter review and publication cycle. A Research Note represents a contribution worthy of circulation, but which either provides general information that does not constitute original research, such as a workshop report, resource description, or innovative idea not yet fully developed, or provides insight into a specific problem and is technically sound, but does not do so in breadth or depth sufficient to warrant an archival contribution to the field.

Manuscript Preparation - Electronic

The IJDAR Editorial office in testing a new system that will allow authors to submit manuscripts electronically. Manuscripts will then be distributed electronically to editors and reviewers, hopefully speeding up the reviewing process by reducing the time necessary to reproduce and send the manuscripts by surface mail.

To submit a manuscript electronically via our Electronic Submission Form , please convert it to PDF and upload it with the information below. There are a number of converters that are available for converting formats such as latex to PDF.

For the initial submission, you only need the PDF readable copy of the manuscript. When a manuscript is ready for final submission, only then must you provide the source files. Please make sure you use an Acrobat reader to make sure the manuscript is VIEWABLE and PRINTABLE!

You will receive an email response when the manuscript is received.

If you have trouble with the system, please contact IJDAR@cfar.umd. edu

Manuscript Preparation - Hardcopy

If you CAN NOT send your submission electronically please use these instructions to submit your manuscript in hard copy.

Five copies of the complete manuscript, including all illustrations should be submitted to the Editorial Coordinator. Do not send original art with the submission. To expedite the reviewing process, please also submit the Title Page and Abstract in ascii format to ijdar@cfar.umd.edu. If the paper is accepted for publication, a final copy and original art will be requested.

Form/style: Manuscripts prepared with latex are preferred for final publication but initial submissions can be in any double spaced format and are not required electronically. Long papers will not be over 40 manuscript pages in length (12 point type, double-spaced, 5 cm margins (2 inch) on one side of the paper only); short papers will not be over 30 double-spaced manuscript pages including figures, references, acknowledgments, footnotes, tables, and captions. As all papers are copy-edited, a double-spaced version is urgently required. Papers should be written in English. Form and content should be carefully checked to exclude the need for corrections at the proof stage. A charge will be made for changes introduced after the manuscript has been set in type. Before the paper is prepared, a copy of the journal should be consulted to ensure that the requirements concerning form and style of presentation are observed.

Title page: The title page must contain the title, the complete name(s) of the author(s), the name and full address of the laboratory or institution where the work was done, and the address, phone and fax number as well as the e-mail address of the author to whom the correspondence should be sent. If the title requires a footnote, this must be included on the title page and indicated by an asterisk.

Authors' biographies: Each author should supply a brief biographical summary of between 50 and 100 words and a black and white glossy photograph, passport sized.

Abstract: Each paper must start with an abstract, summarizing its contents. The abstract should not exceed 100 words. It should be a concise summary of the main theme of the paper and the specific contributions made.

Key words: Immediately following the abstract no more than five key words are to be supplied for subject indexing. They should not simply be taken from the title, but should be representative of the content of the whole article and characteristic of the terminology used within the particular field of study.

Introduction: The introduction should be concise and define the scope of the work in relation to other work done in the same field. It should not, as a rule, give an exhaustive review of the literature.

Footnotes: Footnotes, other than those referring to the title, should be placed at the foot of the manuscript page on which they belong (not at the end of the paper). Use footnotes only when absolutely necessary.

References: All references cited in the text are to be listed at the end of the paper in alphabetical order under the first author's last name. Chronological order is used for more than one publication by the same author or team of authors; where the author's names and year of publication are not enough to distinguish different papers, suffixes a, b, c, etc. should be added to the year.

The standard bibtex style file can be used to prepare and format references.

Responsibility for the accuracy of bibliographic references rests entirely with the author.

Citations in the text can be simple numeric identifiers found with BibTeX. Example: [1] or [1,3,6]

Figures: All figures (halftone illustrations or line drawings) must be mentioned in the text, and the place at which figures are to be inserted should be indicated in the left margin of the paper. Label each figure lightly in soft pencil on the back to show the top of the figure, the authors' names, and the figure number. Figures must be numbered in the same order as the first reference to each occurs in the text. References to figures should be as follows: Fig. 3, Figs. 4,5, Fig. 10a.

Halftone illustrations: please submit sharp, well-contrasted photographic prints, trimmed at right angles.

Line drawings: please submit high-quality glossy prints. The inscriptions should be clearly legible and in a size allowing for reduction.

Color figures are only accepted in special cases and only if color is necessary for comprehension. Authors will be asked to make a contribution to the extra production costs involved. Questions about these costs should be addressed to the Production Department.

Captions: Captions should provide a brief, concise, self-sufficient description of each figure. Information given in the captions should not be repeated in the text. Captions should be listed on a separate page in the order they appear in the paper and appended to the manuscript.

Reprints: Springer has chosen to no longer distribute offprints. Authors will be given access to an electronic version of the publication quality document to print and distribute on a limited basis.

Preparing Manuscripts with Latex2e

Authors who prepare their papers with TEX are encouraged to use the IJDAR Tex Macro package for Latex 2e. Although we can receive files from other applications such as Word, the format will be ignored since we will convert to Latex 2e from an unformatted version of the text. Needless to say, using Latex can considerably reduce the time to publication.

A beta version for the macros is available from the IJDAR Homepage. It can be retrieved by downloading from: ftp://ftp.springer.de/pub/tex/latex/svjour/ijdar/

Authors who wish to submit disks to the editor should do so only after the manuscript has been accepted for publication. They must then include any macro definitions they have used together with a printout for reference. It is important to ensure that the text is identical in the hard copy and in the soft copy.

The production time for papers submitted in this form can be reduced considerably. Authors who have written their papers in LaTeX but have not, for whatever reasons, used Springer-Verlag's macros should send in a disk and corresponding hard copy. Springer-Verlage will then decide on a case-by-case basis whether it makes sense economically to work from other LaTeX files.

Codes for marking:

If TEX styles are not used, the following markings should be used to avoid ambiguity.

Greek letters: red, Gothic letters: blue, Script letters: green, Regular (Roman) letters: yellow, Special Roman letters: wavy blue Boldface: brown, Italics: underline in pencil

Please use pencil for all editorial marks, as the compositor is likely to interpret an ink mark as an element to be printed. If its appearance is ambiguous, underline a capital letter three times. In complicated sections of the text, mark superscripts and subscripts with a caret: (^) Ordinarily subscripts appear below superscripts; they should be typed this way, and marked if variation is desired.

The following elements are often confused and should be identified by the appropriate previously discussed measures or by a circled word or words explaining the element:

graphics/symbols.gif

The letter O and the numeral 0, and the letter l and the numeral 1 occur frequently. Each appearance of one or zero should be identified. The numeral 1 should be written with a hook and baseline bar. Distinguish between the indefinite article a and the italic letter a used in a mathematical context.

Electronic Submission of Final Manuscript

In order to expedite the publication of your paper, we will need two (2) hard copies of your manuscript sent to the IJDAR office and one (1) electronic version. The electronic version should include the original LaTex source (including all style files and figures) and a postscript version of the compiled submission.

Use our *** Author Login Module *** to submit your Final Manuscript.

** If you do not have access to LaTex, an ASCII version is acceptable, but this may delay publication. All figures should be in postscript, and in seperate files.

Note: You will not see any files in this directory.

Manuscripts submitted according to these instructions will reduce considerably the cost of charges to the author in proofs. The only corrections to be made in proofs are typographical errors. Should the author wish to correct stylistic or factual errors in proofs, he must absorb the cost. Proofs must be checked and returned within forty-eight hours of receipt.

The author's address must be clearly indicated, and the publisher must be notified immediately of a change of address.
